One thing, I believe that a star’s colour indicates it's temperature rather age. When a star transitions to its red giant stage of life it expands and cools (temperature reduction) and thus turns redder. So in this case (and some others such as white dwarves) colour is linked to age but only because of the role of temperature in that stage of life. I hope that makes sense?
