Nerd Zoology: a Phylogenetic Quiz
English
Advanced
The phylogeny is the study of the relationships, created by evolution, that occur among the various living beings: imagine a big genealogical tree including all the life forms appeared on Earth. The closer is the last common ancestor among two organisms on the phylogenetic tree, the more they are “closely related”. The first animals in the fossil record go back to over 500 million years ago. Since then, evolution has produced a wide range of morphologies, adapted to the most disparate environments and to the most incredible life strategies. Animals adapted to similar environments have developed similar characters, though they’re not closely related. Others have adapted to so different lifestyles that appear completely different, although they are closely related. And you? Do you really know animals? Try yourself and discover the incredible richness of biodiversity!
